Sinn Féin have expressed their deep disappointment that agreements reached two years ago with Senior Management at Newry, Mourne and Down District Council have still not been implemented, causing the current work-to rule industrial action that continues this week. The organisation have appealed to the Management to engage meaningfully to resolve the current impass as soon as possible.
The current strike action has resulted in a war of words between Council Senior Management and Union bosses.
In a statement a spokesperson said "Two years ago Council’s Senior Management and Trade Unions reached an important agreement on a number of workforce issues including partnership-based job evaluation & harmonisation of workers’ pay across the district.
"Due to this agreement not being implemented, members of all 4 unions have commenced an industrial dispute which has had a significant impact on council services including leisure centres & bin collections this week.
"Sinn Féin have made it clear that we are deeply disappointed that Council Senior Management have yet to implement these previous agreements in full."
The spokesperson added "A needlessly protracted industrial dispute is bad for council workers, bad for council ratepayers, and bad for council service users
"Ahead of talks resuming tomorrow, Sinn Féin again appeal to Council Senior Management to engage meaningfully and in good faith with trade unions to honour agreements made, and resolve this situation as soon as possible."
