Write a commentIn a statement released at the weekend Sinn Fein have said that the Delivery Of a City Park For Newry is a Key Issue for their group on Newry, Mourne and Down Council.
The statement notes that the group view the creation of a fully resourced park as a key element in urban regeneration.
The statement doesn't specifically mention the 15 Acre Park sought at the Albert Basin by campaign groups including Newry 2020 or the upcoming council motion calling for a city park at that location on 2 October.
Speaking on the matter Sinn Féin Newry Mourne & Down Council Group Leader, Cllr Michael Ruane said that the delivery of a City Park for Newry continues to be a key issue for Sinn Féin.
He stated "The delivery of a City Park for Newry continues to be one of the key issues for Sinn Fein in the Council's future plans. Our elected representatives are committed to providing an effective level of leisure and recreation opportunities throughout this Council area and ensuring that those facilities are accessible to the public.
"The creation of a fully resourced Newry City Park is viewed by Sinn Féin as a key element in the important area of urban regeneration. A fully resourced, easily assessable natural Park area would facilitate and encourage healthy lifestyles and emotional well being of all in particular the most vulnerable within our communities. It would also contribute to the social and economic well being of the District.
Cllr Ruane continued "We believe that there is a cross Party support for the delivery of a City Park in Newry and are sure that working together with elected representatives, Council Officers, all stakeholders and potential funding agencies, the vision for a City Park will be realised"
