Write a commentA new Home to Hospital scheme has been launched covering the Slieve Gullion District Electoral Area (DEA).
SPACE organisers of the service are presently looking for volunteer drivers to help the service reach its potential.
The service aims to provided a personalised transport service for over 60's who need to get to out of area hospital appointments including all Belfast hospitals, Craigavon and South Tyrone Hospital, Dungannon. A similar scheme is in operation in the Kilkeel area.
Speaking to those present at Lislea Community Shed for the launch last week, local councillor Barra Ó Muirí explained how the idea came through the DEA Forum in Slieve Gullion, after the success of a similar scheme in The Mournes.
He said “The idea was brought to the Active and Healthy communities committee where I proposed a £10,000 investment in bringing those in need to hospital appointments."
Speaking about the difficulties many residents in rural areas have in getting to appointments Cllr Ó Muiri continued "Our District Electoral Area forum in Slieve Gullion received data that confirmed a serious issue in residents getting to their appointments on time. We believe that this scheme will be a game-changer. Residents will be able to make a phone-call in advance, like when they receive their appointment letter, and book a taxi to their appointment”.
Concluding Barra said “This scheme, run by SPACE, should offer another layer of support to a rural community whose residents can be left very isolated if unable to drive."
