Solutions Proposed for Newry Train Station Parking Problems

Translink is seeking to add an additional 30 car parking spaces at Newry Train Station in the short term as part of efforts to tackle ongoing parking issues.

SDLP Justin McNulty MLA met with Translink officials at Newry Train Station on Wednesday last 10 December to discuss the parking capacity problems at the station. The past weeks have seen cars parked on pavements and blocking access to neighbouring houses due to insufficient parking, which has led to blocked pedestrian and bus access to the station and has disturbed local residents.

Officials discussed their proposed plans to mitigate the issue of parking at the station, including seeking to add the additional 30 car parking spaces in the short term, using temporary bollards to allow buses to turn safely, and other means of managing parking capacity and duration.

McNulty welcomed Translink officials being so positively proactive in seeking to address the lack of parking at the station and protecting access to footpaths and houses, as well as a safe turning facility for buses.

He said: "It was positive to meet with Translink officials today and discuss how to tangibly improve the parking situation at the Newry Train station. It is obviously very positive that as a result of the hourly Enterprise service there are a lot more people travelling by train. The solutions discussed including increases in parking spaces and new proposed systems to alleviate the issues caused by lack of parking at the station are great to hear and I hope they will be quickly implemented to hopefully address concerns of commuters, pedestrians, and residents."
