Southern Regional College students from Newry and Portadown and campuses recently visited Shelbourne Motors new Newry premises.

The Light Vehicle Repair and Body/Paint Repair students observed how the dealerships are operated to the highest possible standards and were treated to a tour of the inner workings of the brand new state-of-the-art dealership in Newry.  The £5m facility on the Armagh Road, which has 60 new employees, includes new Renault and Kia car showrooms, new car handover bays, lounge-style waiting area with café and a drive-thru service centre with a 28-bay service workshop.

The students were given a tour of the workshop, service area and showroom by David Armstrong, Group Aftersales Manager, who outlined how the customer is dealt with from entry to the showroom. He also explained in detail how a vehicle is tracked when it enters the workshop, the level of detail, communication and procedures the technician has to follow, how all materials used are recycled correctly, ending with every car being hand washed, hoovered and the tyres treated.

As part of their course the students are completing modules in 'Health and Safety and Good Housekeeping' and 'Knowledge of Support for Job Roles in the Automotive Environment', and this visit was invaluable in providing them with the practical experience required to complete these modules.

Eamon Brady, SRC Curriculum Area Manager commented “Providing an opportunity to experience a successful dealership, including the fantastic new showroom in Newry, will help our students relate the theory developed in the classroom directly into the work environment.  This visit also inspired our students to improve their skills to the levels required to achieve employment in a top dealership.  We would like to extend our thanks to Shelbourne Motors for the detailed and informative tour of their excellent facilities.”

Shelbourne Motors was founded by the Ward Family in 1973 and currently employs over 130 staff.
