A student and lecturer from Southern Regional College have been shortlisted for OCN NI's Learning Endeavour Awards 2026.

Student Emilis Meinertas and catering lecturer Mairead Fitzpatrick are among six candidates shortlisted in their respective categories. Emilis has been recognised in the 'Further Education Learner of the Year' category, while Mairead is shortlisted for 'Inspiring Tutor of the Year'.  The winners will be announced on Tuesday 23 June at the Titanic Belfast.

Mairead has spent 36 years teaching at SRC and is highly regarded for her work with special educational needs students at the college's Newry and Portadown campuses. She has played a significant role in developing students' independence, confidence and employability skills. In 2021, she was instrumental in developing a one-year Catering Level 1 programme for SEN students in conjunction with Clanrye Group. The programme has achieved strong progression rates, with many students advancing to the Level 2 programme.

Emilis is currently studying for a Hospitality and Catering Level 2 Certificate alongside a Social Media Level 1 Award at SRC's Newry campus. Travelling from across the border, his daily commute involves two buses, yet he has maintained 100% attendance. His tutors have described him as an "exceptional student" who consistently goes the extra mile, having adapted to a new culture and education system despite language barriers and challenging travel logistics.

Michelle Moore, Curriculum Area Manager of Hospitality and Tourism at Southern Regional College, said: "The Hospitality and Tourism team are delighted that Mairead and Emilis have been shortlisted for the OCN NI Awards. Mairead has dedicated 36 years to teaching and is highly regarded for her unwavering commitment to supporting our SEN students. Through her dedication, she has helped many students achieve their goals and progress into employment. She is known for her patience, kindness, and gentle manner, and is a true credit to our college."

She added: "Emilis has demonstrated exceptional commitment to his studies, maintaining 100% attendance despite travelling on two separate buses each day to attend college. He is a hardworking and determined student and is thoroughly deserving of this recognition."
