Food Service students were paired with a competing Chef from their College and had to transform a blank canvas into a themed setting for 2 covers.  This was all under the watchful eyes of Marco Marro and James McGinn who judged this element.

Ideas and creativity were slick, quirky and original with themes expressing less is more to retro and trips down memory lane. Guests firstly arrived for a drinks reception and were presented to their allocated Food Service Student who demonstrated first class standards with a great sense of pride, passion and professionalism.  All guests were served a three course meal which was prepared and cooked in a neighbouring kitchen by the competing chef students under the vigilant judges Noel McMeel and Philip Waring.

The day concluded with an Evening Gala Awards Dinner, commencing with a Drinks Reception followed by a seven course mouth-watering menu prepared, cooked and served by Southern Regional College students.

The Evening Gala Dinner compered by James McGinn was attended by NIHF, Food NI, Judges, Bunzl McLaughlin, The Chief Executive and Directorate of the Southern Regional College, Heads of Curriculum, Tutors and Mentors of the competing students across the colleges and the participating students. The event publicly honoured and rewarded the achievements of students across the colleges who participated during the day.

SRC student Anita Rush from Armagh beat off the stiff competition to win the NI Regional College Chef of the Year 2017! She studies the Level 3 Diploma in Advanced Professional Cookery at Newry Campus.

As well as this SRC student Kieran Cleverley from Warrenpoint was the runner up in NI Regional College Food Service Student of the Year.  He studies the Level 2 Diploma in Professional Cookery also at Newry Campus.

The event was sponsored by Bunzl McLaughlin, Northern Ireland Hotel Federation and Dillon Bass.  SRC would like to congratulate all of the talented students that competed at the event.  If you would like further information on these courses or others available why not visit SRC at the upcoming open days at the start of March.
