There was a large attendance in the St Monica's Boxing Club Newry for the first of a series of Workshops aimed at improving public safety and educating participants on risks like substance abuse, anti-social behaviour, discouraging youth crime and healthy relationships, while empowering them with skills to make safer choices and contribute to their community's wellbeing.
This week's Workshop focused on the issue of Anti- social behaviour (ASB) , explaining the definition, impact and illegality of ASB.
The young people in attendance listened to presentations from PSNI Officers Flannigan and Peters of the Neighbourhood Policing Team and Cllr Aidan Mathers, Chairperson of the Policing & Community Safety Partnership (PCSP) Anti Social Behaviour sub committee.
Discussions also covered risk factors such as alcohol, negative peer influence, and a lack of identity and youth crime.
Thanking the club for hosting the event Councillor Mathers said: "Well done to all involved. Events like these help educate our young people on the impact of ASB, prevent their involvement in crime, and promote positive social behaviour. Myself and the Neighbourhood Policing team deeply appreciated the input from the young people present, which itself is key to ensuring that our young people are included as stakeholders and are being listened to."
Pat McGinn St Monica's Child Protection Officer thanking all who participated in the event said: "The presentations were informative and well received and many thanks to Cllr Mathers and the Neighbourhood Policing Team for their inputs."
St Monica's Committee have arranged a series of Workshops with the next one focusing on Violence Against Women and Young Girls.
