Write a commentAn online series of videos which address the begging issue in Newry have been released this week by Newry BID in conjunction with the Policing and Community Safety Partnership.
The series aims to provide information to shoppers on giving responsibly to beggars in Newry throughout the year but especially in the lead-up to Christmas.
The ‘Beg to Differ’ mini-video series includes one where the beggar is left off in a car, sets out their sleeping bag and cardboard to sit on and then is collected later when another person takes charge of the money.
Eamonn Connolly, BID manager, said “We are not saying not to give. We are saying give responsibly and be sensitive to the many realities facing those who beg. One way to do this is to give to charities, which can then offer additional support to those in need.”
Policing and Community Safety Partnership chairman Terry Hearty said: “Newry, Mourne & Down PCSP welcomes the opportunity to work in partnership with Newry BID in raising awareness of this issue, particularly as we approach the busy Christmas season.”
