Write a commentHealthcare professionals have attended a Macmillan well-being event in the Canal Court Hotel in Newry for breast cancer patients, friends and family members.
The event organised by the Southern Trust provided specific information about specialist care and support available locally for breast cancer patients, during and after cancer treatment.
Dietary advice, the importance of regular exercise and rebuilding confidence and self-esteem, were just some of the topics discussed.
Ms. Reem Salam, Breast Cancer Surgeon, Craigavon Area Hospital said: “It is widely accepted that although the occurrence of breast cancer is increasing the number of deaths attributed to breast cancer have been significantly decreasing over the past number of years.
“Breast cancer survival is increasing and there are many contributing factors including; advances in research, new treatment options, earlier detection from screening, personalised treatment by cancer subtyping and improved understanding of genetics.
“Women today are being educated about how they can be a part of this process including how to potentially decrease their risk of developing breast cancer through simple changes in their lifestyle choices; through healthy eating, being active and becoming more breast aware.
“I was absolutely thrilled to see so many patients attending this event and to hear such positive feedback following their treatment at our world class unit which uses new advanced technology in imaging and surgery supported by our multidisciplinary team.”
