Write a commentPolice are on the scene of a security alert in the Violet Hill Avenue area of Newry this evening (Sunday 24 November).
Some houses have been evacuated and the bomb disposal squad are in attendance.
Two bomb disposal trucks arrived on the scene just after 6pm. The police helicopter is also providing aerial backup.
Councillor Gavin Malone was on the scene handing out torches for residents.
The main Armagh Road to Fiveways is not affected.
Inspector Ryan Moore said: "It follows a report to police at approximately 3:45pm today of a suspicious object in the area.
"A small number of homes have been evacuated and cordons are in place in the Violet Hill Avenue area, including at the junction of College Gardens."

Sinn Féin’s Mickey Brady said that those responsible for the ongoing security alert in the Violet Hill area of Newry City care nothing about the disruption to local residents and the wider community.
“Police have gone door to door and told people of the suspect device near Sharkies Field. Whilst some residents have left their homes others have chose to stay to the back of their home.
“This is a very concerning incident and caused disruption to people living in the area.
“Those responsible for this ongoing last disruption have shown complete disregard for local residents and the local community”.
