The popular café chain Synge & Byrne has ceased trading in the north, with Newry losing their popular Sugarhouse Quay premises. Other towns will also see their premises close.
The historic Sugarhouse Quay building was closed thanks to the extensive Newry floods of Halloween 2023 but reopened six months later following extensive refurbishment but today it was announced that as a result of "Challenging market conditions, rising costs and a growing debt burden" that they had stopped trading leaving them with "no other option."
In a post on Facebook this evening, 22 January announcing the decision a spokesperson said "We want to sincerely thank our amazing team, our customers and communities for your unwavering loyalty & support over the last 12 years - We are deeply grateful to you all. Thank you for being part of the Synge&Byrne story"
The café was busy yesterday when Newry.ie had a coffee in the Sugarhouse Quay premises. It was so cosy with its beautiful roaring fire and was a popular destination for walkers and cyclists using the Newry Canal towpath. It was also a great venue for Iur Cinn Fleadh music sessions.
Synge & Byrne had Cafés in Newry, Kilbroney Forest Park, Craigavon, Derry, Newtownabbey, Belfast, Antrim and Dungannon. They also had a Café in Slieve Gullion Courtyard at one stage. It's thought that up to 80 jobs could be lost.
