Newry natives Amy McVerry and Colin Somers tackled a 10,000 foot skydive to raise vital funds for local animal welfare charity, the USPCA. Raising over an incredible £1,300 between them, the fearless duo took to the skies all for a great cause.
Taking place at Skydive Wild Geese Garvagh, the skydivers and USPCA representatives were welcomed with overcast skies however, with the weather eventually on their side, it turned out to be a beautiful day.
Commending Amy and Colin, Colleen Tinnelly, USPCA Development Manager, said, “We are so delighted with Amy and Colin’s bravery and incredible fundraising efforts on behalf of the USPCA.
“Their support has been overwhelming as over recent months, due to Covid, we have been faced with many challenges as we tried to maintain full operations with very little donations due to all fundraising activities being postponed. We cannot thank them enough for their commitment to the charity.”
Upon completing the skydive Colin said, “One of my main reasons for doing this is that animals, especially dogs play a vital part in people’s lives. Just over a year we adopted our dog Ruby from the USPCA and she has brought us so much joy. The whole process of the jump, especially experiencing the freefall was something I have really wanted to do for some time. To be able to do that and do something for a charity was a perfect combination”.
Commenting on the experience, Amy said, “I chose to support the USPCA as it’s a charity that I hold very close to my heart. Neglect towards defenceless animals is becoming all too common and we need to be their voice. The skydive was amazing and worth every anxious minute leading up to it – but knowing it was helping animals made it that bit easier.”
