Write a commentThe Polish Supplementary School in Newry PSU/Newry has reached it's tenth anniversary and has launched a video to mark the occasion. The school cultivates a knowledge of Polish language, customs and tradition and helps Polish children and families to integrate and socialise with the Newry community.
The school was originally based at St Colman's Abbey PS and is now based at St Joseph's Boys High School in Newry.
A celebratory event was held at the school on Saturday with hundreds in attendance.
The video produced with the help of Peace IV features teachers at the school as well as pupils. Also speaking is Honorary Consul of Poland, Newry man, Jerome Mullen.
In the video Teacher Jolanta Czarnocka explains the importance of giving pupils a knowledge of their home country "I belong to the group of teachers who have been working in the school since it's beginning and I see that every year we have more and more children. I believe our work as teachers is very important because children want to attend this school, they want to gain knowledge about Poland, their homeland."
The youngest teacher at the time, Marta Szwenik remembers the opening day of the school as if it was yesterday and pointed out "The school was founded by wonderful people who have done something great for the Polish people in Newry and it has been continued by other wonderful people. The list of those people grows and the achievements of our school are fantastic."
