Write a commentA new Sinn Féin Cumann has been launched in Killeavy and a banner unveiled at last weeks event at Newry Golf Inn
The Toal/Harte Cumann, is named after republican activists Pa Toal and Pat Harte.
The evening was chaired by councillor Liz Kimmins and was attended by elected reps from all over Newry and South Armagh including MLAs Megan Fearon and Conor Murphy and MP Mickey Brady.
Conor Murphy was the main speaker at the event and he gave an update on the political situation in the assembly.
Sean Hughes, who knew Pa Toal and Pat Harte, spoke more personally about the men themselves; their character, dedication and community spirit as well as recalling a few personal stories.
The families of Pa Toal and Pat Harte were also in attendance to see the unveiling of the new cumann banner which features both men prominently.
Commenting on the occasion the new cumann’s chairperson Enda Hughes, thanked all those who had made the night possible.“On behalf of myself and all members I would like to take this opportunity to thank all sponsors and anyone who supported or helped in any way to make this event possible; particularly people who bought tickets and all those who were able to attend,”
The chairperson concluded “Finally, but most importantly, we would like to send our thanks and solidarity to the families of Pa Toal and Pat Harte; without people of their character to energise and inspire us the republican movement would not be in the position it is today.
“We are stronger than we have ever been, locally and nationally and the setting up of this cumann is a symbol of the increase in political strength in the area and across the country.
“Together we’ll build the republic that Pa and Pat dedicated their lives to"
