The impressive immersive light exhibition Illumaphonium: Halo was launched tonight at Newry Town Hall by Cllr Valerie Harte, Chairperson, Newry, Mourne and Down District Council who welcomed visitors to the event. As well as the columns with blue halos the area has been lit up with localised lighting and projected images giving a bright vibrant feeling to the vicinity of the Town Hall.
Cllr Harte said "As we all remember, Newry was hit by devastating floods a few months ago and many of the shops and businesses on and around Sugar Island were badly affected.
"Funded by the Department of Communities, we have all been working together to provide support to some of the affected areas and we are hoping to deliver initiatives to encourage people back into Sugar Island at this time of year."
The contemporary dance group Maiden Voyage performed a specially commissioned piece at the art installation.
The light and sound piece by musician and inventor Michael Davis is open until 29 Feb each evening from 5pm -10pm.
