From today 30 March Translink aas part of their Covid-19 response is reducing cash handling by introducing a ‘no change policy’ when buying tickets on board all bus and train services.

Passengers must tender the correct fare if using cash to buy their ticket from the driver on the bus or conductor on the train. There will be no facility to provide change to the passenger in an effort to further reduce contact between customers and staff on board to help reduce the spread of the virus.

Passengers buying tickets at bus and train stations will still be able to receive change, however, are strongly urged where possible to use prepaid ticket options or tender the exact fare to reduce the amount of cash handling.

Ian Campbell, Translink’s Director of Service Operations said “We are doing all we can to fight the spread of Covid-19 while we maintain vital public transport for those that really need us.  We know many of our passengers are already travelling using prepaid tickets such as m-link or multi-journey tickets or paying using contactless at stations, on board the train from the conductor or Glider TVM’s.  Also our front line staff have been issued with gloves as further protection.

“This latest measure is vital to help fight the spread, protect the NHS and maintain safe and reliable transport for health and other critical workers.

“We would call on the public to continue to follow the expert advice, including maintaining social distancing between other passengers and staff and help our hardworking employees maintain essential public transport in the weeks and months ahead. These measures will help us all to stay safe and help save lives”, Ian concluded.
