Last night's December meeting of Newry, Mourne and Down District Council was the last full council meeting for two Newry Councillors who are retiring from their roles after a combined 30 years serving the public.
Council Chairperson Cllr Michael Savage in tribute to his council chamber colleagues Cllr Charlie Casey and Cllr Roisin Mulgrew spoke about the long serving Sinn Féin representatives who between them have been Chair of the Council three times.

Cllr Savage said "Charlie has been a councillor for the last 21 years since 2001, was a former mayor of Newry and Mourne [and Down] District Council in 2011 and of Newry, Mourne and Down District Council in 2019. We all know how difficult life can be as a councillor and of being a public representative and the pressures that it can put on family life but to be able to do it for 21 years is real mark of dedication to the community you represent Charlie." He concluded by wishing Cllr Casey and his wife Bridie well in his retirement.
Speaking about Cllr Mulgrew the Chairperson said "Roisin has been a councillor for nine years and was chair of Newry, Mourne and Down District Council in 2017. You've been a diligent politician Roisin and always a strong adversary in the chamber and somebody who has represented with gusto the people of the district that you stand in". Concluding Cllr Savage wished Cllr Mulgrew and her family all the best in the years to come.
