The Southern Health and Social Care Trust has marked National Cancer Clinical Nurse Specialist (CNS) Day by recognising the work of its specialist nursing teams who support patients and families affected by cancer.
The Trust has 50 Cancer Clinical Nurse Specialists working across 11 specialist areas, including haematology, palliative care and acute oncology. As well as providing expert clinical care, the specialists offer emotional support, guidance and reassurance to patients and their families throughout their cancer journey.
Among those being recognised are the dermatology CNS team of Wendy, Paula and Laura, who care for patients diagnosed with melanoma, squamous cell carcinoma and Merkel cell carcinoma. The team meets patients at diagnosis, during follow-up reviews and at the time of surgery. On National CNS Day, the team used the occasion to highlight a broader public health message. "Everyone needs to protect their skin, no matter their skin type or background. Tanning beds are dangerous. If we had one wish this CNS Day, it would be to make tanning beds illegal," they said.
The Trust's Breast Care Nurse Specialists, Eimer, Annie, Katie, Aine and Lynsey, work with patients from their first investigation appointment through diagnosis, treatment, surgery and into survivorship, also supporting families throughout. In response to patient feedback around breast self-examination, the team recently introduced a new Breast Awareness information leaflet featuring a QR code linking to a short demonstration video. Patients have reported increased confidence in performing self-examinations as a result. The team has also partnered with Northern Ireland breast cancer charity Pretty n Pink to provide a free post-surgical bra service, helping to reduce anxiety before surgery and ease financial pressure for many patients.
The Trust's Urology Cancer Nurse Specialists continue to provide expert guidance and a point of contact for patients and their families. Reflecting on her role, Clare Crothers said: "Cancer nursing is where science meets humanity. Supporting bladder cancer patients reminds me every day that empathy, knowledge and presence can change someone's entire experience of care."
Clair Quin, Head of Cancer Services at the Southern Trust, paid tribute to CNS teams across the organisation. "Behind every cancer diagnosis, there is a CNS who helps patients find their way forward. On National CNS Day, we celebrate their dedication and recognise the difference they make to patients and families every single day."
