Try your hand at fishing on Newry Canal

It's hard to imagine, and indeed there are no signs anywhere that it took place at all, but in 2004 Newry hosted the Confédération Internationale de la Pêche Sportive (CIPS) World Coarse Angling Championships on Newry Canal, bringing the worlds top fishermen and fisherwomen to Newry for a short time. Other competitions have taken place since but none quite as prestigious as the 'World's'

Now an initiative to make more of the amazing facility that is Newry Canal is being organised in February by Newry, Mourne and Down District Council. It's a great opportunity for the young and not so young to try their hand at fishing.

The Introductory Workshops to Coarse Fishing will take place on Newry Canal in the Sugar Island area during the midterm school break from 14-17 February.

On the day participants will learn about tying a rig, the basic understanding of baits and about fish species. These are FREE workshops, which will provide a great opportunity for families and young people to meet up outdoors, try a new activity and hopefully catch a fish on Newry Canal. 

The hourly sessions will take place daily from Monday 14 - Thursday 17 February and you can book time slots as follows: 10am, 11am, 12pm, 1pm,2pm and 3pm
