Write a commentThe arrival of a steel structure at the Event Space in Marcus Square, Newry has caused quite a bit of discussion and created quite a conversation with everyone giving their opinions on the latest piece of Newry street furniture. It's the shell for a long promised TV in the City Centre.
Certainly a lot more conversation is taking place, than would have been had if the latest LCD screen TV was installed and turned on, at the city centre location!
The general consensus seems to be that while the idea of a TV itself in the city centre may not be a bad idea, it’s sheer scale and location at the side of Newry Cathedral is just wrong.
A Change.org Petition has already been launched with over 600 signatures already. Comments on the petition include the aesthetic issue …
“I am signing because it is HIDEOUS looking. I wonder how much of the ratepayers money that cost. Totally destroys the view of the beautiful Cathedral”
and the bewilderment question …..
“Seriously? This is supposed to be a screen or something. From the images I've seen I assumed it was a Soviet-era climbing frame or a pigeon prison. What would the good people of Newry watch on this screen? Celebrity bare-knuckle boxing with Eamonn Holmes? I struggle to see how some high-minded council bod thought what Hill Street needed to restore its sense of community was a monument to loneliness. I hope this turns out to be an art installation on the theme of misery. This is almost as bad as the metal flippin' Christmas tree.”

At this stage it's not known when the finishing date for the project is.
