The PSNI are appealing for information following a report of an assault in Crossmaglen at the weekend which left two men needing hospital treatment with one of them still in hospital.

Police received a report at around 12:10am on Sunday (2nd May) that two men, aged in their twenties and fifties, had been assaulted in the village approximately 10 minutes earlier in the Dundalk Road area.

It was reported that up to five males, who had got out of two vehicles that stopped on the Dundalk Road, were involved in the assault which left both victims with injuries that required hospital treatment. The victim aged in his twenties remains in hospital at this time. 

A  25-year-old man was subsequently arrested on suspicion of offences, including grievous bodily harm with intent, and he has since been released on bail pending further enquiries. 

Detective Constable Slevin said: "Our investigation into this vicious assault continues, and we are keen to hear from anyone who was in the Dundalk Road area at around midnight and who witnessed any suspicious behaviour, or anything unusual, to call our detectives. The number to call is 101, quoting reference number 33 of 02/05/2021."

Great Anger

Slieve Gullion Councillors, Cllr Aoife Finnegan and Cllr Barra O Muirí said the assault in the Crossmaglen Square vicinity had caused great anger within the  community.

Cllr Finnegan said “Myself and my colleague Cllr Barra Ó Muirí share the anger and distress of the wider community at the news of this incident. We hope that despite their injuries and violent experience, they will make a full recovery”.

The Councillor continued,“These vicious  assaults took place near Crossmaglen Square  and again on the Dundalk Road where they were literally ambushed by a number of men travelling in two vehicles”.

 Cllr O Muirí added “These attacks have caused great anger within the wider community. These attacks have resulted in very serious physical injuries and trauma to  the victims. One had been hospitalised and  remains in a stable condition in hospital awaiting an operation.

"Myself and Aoife condemn those who perpetrated this vicious  attack and urge members of the community who have any information relating to the incident to please contact the Police”.
