MLA Justin McNulty has said he was ‘completely overwhelmed’ by the generosity the local community has shown in stepping up to support Ukraine. It follows many community collections undertaken in the past week.
Mr. McNulty said, “like many other people, I was really distressed watching the scenes in Ukraine unfold in the news and online, so I decided to offer my offices in both Newry & Armagh as drop off locations for hygiene and sanitary items, blankets and warm clothing, non-perishables, baby products, and medical supplies.
“The response from people across the area has been absolutely incredible. I want to give special mention to the pupils and staff at both St. Mary’s High School in Newry & St. Mark’s High School in Warrenpoint, who collected and delivered a huge number of donations down to the office."
The first truck load left Belfast Port today with Paul Doherty bound for the Ukrainian / Romanian border.
Mr McNulty added “These supplies will be delivered to the Ukraine this week. I’m so grateful for people’s kindness and compassion, especially at a time when everyone is trying to make their pennies stretch that bit further. This has served as a real reminder of the kindness and decency of our local community.”
