Write a commentLocal trade union unite have decided to organise two free trips this week for young people in the Derrybeg and Carnagat areas with team building as the major theme.
Unite youth co-coordinator Tara McKeown stated “As the youth coordinator for Newry Unite youth activist committee our committee is dedicated in dealing with young people’s issues in Newry and outlying areas. Our committee runs in conjunction with Newry Unite community and Industrial branches. Over the last number of months Newry Unite community branch has stood shoulder to shoulder with the people of Derrybeg /Carnagat during a bout of anti-social behaviour and criminality; our activists distributed hundreds of leaflets throughout the area to highlight the dangers of such behaviour- thankfully it has eased off and hopefully stopped!
"Following on from this- myself and Unite community activist and local councillor Kevin McAteer had a number of discussions with the youths / children of the area. As youth leaders we both felt it was of paramount importance to talk to the young people and try and understand what was happening on the ground. Our discussions were open, honest and frank. It was stressed to us that the perpetrators were a very small element of people who were attracting others into the area. Many of the young people we talked with were angry and frustrated as they felt “all the youths of the area were being tarred with the one brush. We at Unite firmly believe in our young people and we are only too aware that a few misguided individuals can besmirch the reputations of others! Unite are pleased to announce two free excursions for the young people of Derrybeg / Carnagat, these excursions are fun packed with team building as the main theme. “
