A reader had an unusual find on their walk on Slieve Gullion yesterday when they came across this lizard although unfortunately it was dead when they spotted it.
The viviparous lizard (Zootoca vivipara) known as the Common Lizard measures 10-16cm long and is Ireland’s only native terrestrial reptile. As reptiles are cold blooded they need to find heat from surrounding surfaces or the sun, hence why in sunnier climes you can see them almost looking as if they are sunbathing before darting off in a flash.
They hibernate from October to March so this poor one didn't get the chance to see much of 2022!
Let us know of any unusual finds you have had in the locality.
