The family of an Abbey Grammar School pupil have put out an urgent call for people to register themselves as a potential bone marrow donor following the diagnosis of their son and brother with leukaemia.
Daniel Greer is just 14 years old and is also a member of the Cross Border Orchestra of Ireland. Last month he was complaining about pains in his back and bone pain. What followed in a matter of a couple of days was every parents nightmare.
Following blood tests and an X-ray he was admitted to the Royal Victoria Hospital, where he was diagnosed with AML (acute myeloid leukaemia), an agressive type of blood cancer. His family have been told that he needs a bone marrow transplant and it is now a race against time to find a suitable donor.
Daniel's family are asking for every one that can to register as a Donor on the DKMS website as a matter of urgency.
In a heartfelt plea for people to sign the register his brother James said "It only takes 2 minutes to register and have a swab kit sent out to you. The swab sample only takes 5 minutes to do.
"YOU could be the match that Daniel needs! YOU could make the difference!! YOU could be the match that someone on the other side of the world is currently praying for, waiting and hoping that YOU are out there and willing to save their life.
"Essentially you could save someone’s life in less than 10 minutes, and without even leaving the house! So what are you waiting for? All I ask is that you take 2 minutes to register as bone marrow donor or a blood donor. You may never get called upon but you could possibly save up to 7 people’s lives! You could make the difference!! Please, do it for Daniel!"
