The elected representative has had a lengthy involvement in highlighting the issue of the many thousands of undocumented Irish in the United States and pursuing resolution to the problem which would create a new legal pathway for those deemed illegal.
This week the U.S. Senate Judiciary Committee kicks off what is expected to be a lengthy process of debating and amending the immigration bill.
"The Irish Lobby for Immigration (ILIR) President Ciaran Staunton has stated that this is probably the last opportunity there is to address the long term issue of legal access to America for Irish immigrants. That's the bottom line, it is important that all those with an interest in ending this nightmare for many thousands of hard working Irish in America, deemed illegal, make one big push to get this issue of comprehensive reform over the line. This issue impacts on many from this area, irrespective of their creed or class and it is imperative that all political leaders on this island use their contacts and influence to finally address their nightmare" said the Councillor who will be asking Newry and Mourne Council to write to the Senate Judiciary Committee urging them to work together to ensure a new legal pathway for the Irish in America.
