Newry and Mourne Museum will be open to the public for the Spring Bank Holiday on Monday 29 May from 10.00am until 4.30pm.
Housed at Bagenal’s Castle, a 16-century fortified house, the museum is one of Newry’s oldest buildings. The castle’s early history, closely connected with the Nine Years War, the Flight of the Earls and the Ulster Plantation, places Newry at the centre of a seminal period in Irish history. The main exhibitions in the Museum include prehistoric material, Newry as a merchant town, the working life of the area and modern experiences of living in a Border area.
You can visit the new temporary exhibition ‘Caring for the Community: The Development of Medicine in Newry and Mourne’ that examines the role of local dispensaries and healthcare in the 19th century, the development of hospitals in the area, local chemists, the introduction of the National Health Service in 1948 and the impact of the Troubles in the 1970s and 1980s. The exhibition themes and artefacts on display are put into context by the recollections of several local health care professionals which are published in the free booklet which accompanies the exhibition.
For visitors who wish to take a stroll through the galleries, the Museum provides FREE audio guides, available in English, Irish, French and German, which provide more information on the Castle and the exhibitions. There is also an audio guide that children in the age range 7-12 can enjoy. This is available in Irish and English.
Also for our younger visitors is the free comic “Back in Time at Newry and Mourne Museum”, which acts as an introduction to the history of Newry and Mourne and makes the Museum Collection more accessible. This fun and colourful book takes children through 9,000 years of our history to see some of the major events and meet some the people that have helped shape the development of this historic region. Many of the artefacts from the Museum Collection also make cameo appearances.
