Exhibits from The Legacy: Newry 1920 - 1930 exhibition

Check out Newry and Mourne Museum over the Summer break and see the exhibitions, which trace the social and political history of this historic region.

On 12 and 13 July we are hosting free tours of the galleries and exhibitions which trace the social and political heritage of this historic region. Tours start at 11am and 2pm each day, numbers are limited.

The main exhibitions in the Museum include prehistoric material, Newry as a merchant town, the working life of the area and modern experiences of living in a Border area. Changes are made to the main exhibitions on an annual basis. In addition to the three main galleries, there are two temporary exhibition galleries.

You will visit the temporary exhibition ‘War Declared: the local impact of World War II’, which looks at the impact of the conflict on Newry and Mourne. The exhibition also considers the effect of the war on the local economy, especially in the context of a Border community, and the legacy of war in the area in the later 1940s and 1950s. Visitors will also see the new ‘The Legacy: Newry 1920 - 1930’ exhibition, which examines how the Newry and Mourne area was affected by the events that shaped modern Ireland, from the War of Independence, the Treaty negotiations, Partition, the Civil War and of course being on the northern side of the border after the Boundary Commission report in 1925.

For visitors who wish to take a stroll through the galleries, the Museum provides FREE audio guides in English, Irish, French German which provide more information on the Castle and the exhibits. A tour aimed at children in the age range 7-12 is now available in English and Irish.

For younger visitors the Museum will host its summer workshops from 25 to 29 July. The activities are inspired by the main and temporary exhibitions and by the area in which we live. This year our theme is “Have Fun in the Sun with Seaside and Sun”. The sessions include clay modelling, 3D seaside scenes, making sunny plant pots and sun pictures.

These free workshops are designed for children aged 5 – 11 and will take place from 11am – 1pm.

For more information or wish to book for the free tours or the for the summer workshops please Declan.Carroll@nmandd.org

Additionally! I want to inform you that the Council’s two Museums have a new combined microsite that will give more information about both venues, their collections, services and events. Please visit the site here: www.visitmournemountains.co.uk

The Museums also have joint social media sites for Facebook:  www.facebook.com Twitter:twitter.com and now Instagram: www.instagram.com

The Museum would love it if you could visit the various sites and let us know what you think. We would also be grateful if you could share the links with those you think would appreciate posts about our local heritage.
