With thousands of visitors every year to the cairn on top of Slieve Gullion, accidental damage to the stone placement around the structure can inevitably take place. The people behind Mourne-Gullion-Strangford UNESCO Geopark are planning repairs to the area and are looking members of the public to volunteer. Repairs have been carried out twice since 2012 and this August it is planned to carry out some more maintenance and the ancient passage tomb.
The repairs will be supervised by archaeologists from NI Environment Agency's Historic Environment Department.
The event will take place on Saturday, 26th August and you muct be over 14 to join in. Participants will start at the Slieve Gullion Forest Park main car park for a safety discussion and an introduction to the project. They will then car-share to the top carpark (there is insufficient parking at the top for everyone to park there), and then walk the route together to the summit where the work party will be organised.
If taking part please bring a packed lunch, waterproofs, strong boots (steel toecaps if you have them) and warm clothing as well as sunscreen.
