Warrenpoint Odour - Councillor Wants Re-Gen's Licence Revoked

A Newry, Mourne and Down District Council Councillor has claimed that residents of Warrenpoint are once again having to deal with an odour akin to a "wheelie bin stench" and has said that campaigners won't stop until Re-Gen's licence is revoked.

Crotlieve Councillor Mark Gibbons has spoke out many times concerning a smell coming from Warrenpoint Port, blaming Re-Gen Waste who store and transport bales of waste material via the port. In 2024 the port commissioned an independent report which stated that 42 complaints have been made to the Environmental Health Department of NMDDC about odour, flies and noise.

Cllr Gibbons said: "Just in time for Christmas, the Re-Gen stink has once again returned to the homes of residents in Warrenpoint. Families are being forced to endure a revolting, wheelie-bin stench, the kind that turns the stomach, at a time of year that should be about happiness, dignity, and welcoming loved ones home."

The Crotlieve Councillor added: "It is disappointing, though not surprising, that instead of taking responsibility, apologising, and showing leadership, Re-Gen have chosen to flood their social media feeds with promotional material once again.

"Glossy posts do not mask foul odours, nor do they smother the real elephant in the room, the lived reality of residents. This situation is mortifying for the proud people of Warrenpoint, particularly those with family and friends returning home for Christmas."

Cllr Gibbons believes a "deep seated arrogance" is on display. "As we move into the New Year, it is clear that once again the people of Warrenpoint will have to stand up to this disgusting smell and to this disgusting treatment. There is a deep-seated arrogance on display here, and it needs to be broken."

He added that he is determined to have Re-Gen's licence revoked. "Let there be no mistake, we will not stop until Re-Gen’s licence in Warrenpoint is revoked. Residents deserve respect, accountability, and the right to live in their own homes without being subjected to this year after year. You can flood timelines with gloss, but you cannot drown out the truth."
