US President Barack Obama has said the time is now for sweeping immigration reforms which ultimately could lead to peace of mind for many thousands of local undocumented people in places like Boston and New York.
The move has been welcomed by Newry and Mourne Sinn Fein Councillor Pat Mc Ginn who said Obama had given cause for great hope for many thousands of Undocumented Irish living in the USA and currently branded as illegal immigrants.
" I share the satisfaction by many of those individuals and groups who over the years have lobbied for comprehensive immigration reform that the issue is once again on the political radar. Ciaran Staunton President of the Irish Lobby for Immigration Reform (ILIR) commenting on the recent news stated that it was essential to ensure that there is a future flow of visas for the Irish, who were badly disadvantaged by the 1965 Immigration Act.
That is a sentiment I endorse completely and I will continue to highlight the issue where possible" said the Councillor who added "I have had many calls from both America, and families here at home seeking clarification on what is being rolled out.
We have been advised to take things slowly as the information in relation to the proposals is analyzed. Whilst there is optimism, there also has to be caution" said the elected representative who has been actively involved in the Undocumented Irish issue for many years.,
