Write a commentLast week Police in South Armagh joined Northern Ireland Environment Agency and the Health and Safety Executive Northern Ireland to conduct searches with the aim of tackling wildlife crime.
Inspector Lorraine Dobson, South Armagh Neighbourhood Policing Team, explained: “ We joined with our partner agencies on Tuesday, 13 January to conduct searches in the Drumbanagher area following the discovery of a dead buzzard in a wood in the area during October 2014. Enquiries revealed that the buzzard had been poisoned by a chemical compound known as carbofuren.
“Carbofuren is a banned substance and should not be spread on fields however there are a number of instances where we see its continued use as an insecticide. Buzzards are protected under the Wildlife (NI) Order 1985, as amended by the Wildlife and Natural Environment Act (NI) 2011, and it is illegal to kill, injure or take a buzzard or to take, damage or destroy an active nest or its contents.
“During searches a dead cat was found and this has now been sent away for testing.
“Wildlife crime is unacceptable and we will continue to work with our partners to take action and raise awareness of this type of crime. If you have concerns or information about wildlife crime, please contact us on the 101 number.”
