Staff at Newry's Windsor Day Care Centre have been awarded the prestigious 'Edel Corr Award for Compassionate Care' in recognition of their outstanding service to adults with learning disabilities.
The award, established in memory of nurse Edel Corr who passed away in 2021, acknowledges the centre's commitment to providing exceptional care and support to service users and their families.
A highlight of the centre's recent achievements includes the launch of their Bespoke Bungalow in August 2023, a specialised facility designed to support adults with learning disabilities, ASD, and associated conditions. The team has implemented innovative communication methods, incorporating various assistive technologies including Talking Mats, visual supports, iPads, and the Attention Autism Programme.
Their dedication to improving communication has received praise from service users and families, with one testimonial stating, "Being listened to made such a difference to us all."
Dawn Ferguson, Interim Director Executive Director Nursing Midwifery, AHP, Functional Support Services and IPC, presented the award to the team. Speaking at the presentation, she said: "Windsor Day Centre provides an essential and beneficial service for school leavers with complex behavioural needs, which has had a positive impact on our service users quality of life and also their family members."
She added: "Edel was passionate about improving care for people with a learning disability, and so it is a real privilege and honour to present the 2024 Edel Corr Award to everyone at Windsor Day Centre, Newry."
The centre continues to play a vital role in providing day care services focused on service user support, rehabilitation, and carer support within the Newry community.
