A woman has attended hospital after she was punched in the face by two males who attempted to hijack her car in Newry last night, 31 January. The incident took place in the Hospital Road area of the City and a 40 year old man has been arrested.
Detectives are appealing for information following the attempted hijacking and assault. Detective Inspector Johnston said: "It was reported just after 8.30pm that two males had attempted to hijack a car in the Hospital Road area of the city.
"They then assaulted the female owner of the car, punching her to the face, while trying to get the car keys. A passer-by intervened before the men made off from the scene. The woman attended hospital for her injuries, which are not believed to be life threatening at this time.
"A 40 year old man was later arrested on suspicion of attempted hijacking and common assault. He remains in custody, assisting with enquiries at this stage.”
Detective Inspector Johnston continued: “We would continue to appeal to the public for any information that could help us identify the other suspect in the incident, who was described as being of slim build and wearing dark tracksuit bottoms, a dark zip up hoody, trainers and dark gloves.
"If you have information you believe could assist our investigation, call detectives on the non-emergency number 101, quoting reference 1826 of 31/01/22."
Information can also be provided to the independent charity Crimestoppers on 0800 555 111 which is 100% anonymous and gives people the power to speak up and stop crime.
MLA Justin McNulty has condemned the incident which he claims took place in the grounds of Daisy Hill with a health worker the subject of the attack.
McNulty commented “I am totally disgusted at the news of an attack by two thugs on one of our frontline health staff at Daisy Hill. I understand that the two men involved in the attack only left the scene after a passer-by intervened, so I dread to think what might have happened if that person hadn’t have come upon them. The woman who was attacked attended hospital to receive treatment for her physical injuries; I can only imagine how horrendous an ordeal this must have been for her and for her family. I hope she recovers and has not been traumatized by this horrible act of cowardice.
“I have contacted police and an arrest has been made. It is vital now that the second culprit is apprehended and proactive steps are taken by police to ensure that this never happens again.”
