Legendary traditional Irish folk band, Altan, will be gracing the stage at Newry Town Hall on Sunday August 25 to headline this year's Iúr Cinn Fleadh.
Known for their dynamic performances and deep-rooted connection to traditional Irish music, Altan’s presence on the August Bank Holiday weekend promises an unforgettable evening celebrating the rich musical heritage of the area.
Belfast born flute player Frankie Kennedy met fiddler and singer Mairéad Ní Mhaonaigh in the seventies during a visit to the Gaoth Dobhair Gaeltacht sparking off a deep musical connection, marriage in 1981, and a journey that took them all over the world with Altan, the band they founded. Their vision was to bring the unique repertoire of Donegal music to the world and that mission is still as strong as ever.
Tragically the great talent that was Frankie Kennedy was lost to the world in 1994 when he passed away from cancer but his legacy very much lives on with Altan who continue to record as well as touring Europe and America. They even collaborated at with Dolly Parton on her 2001 album 'Little Sparrow'.
Currently the band is made up of Mairéad, Ciaran Curran, Mark Kelly, Dáithí Sproule, Máirtín Tourish and Clare Friel. Earlier this year they released the album 'Donegal' celebrating the county in song.
The gig is courtesy of Narrow Water Promotions in conjunction with Iur Cinn Fleadh. Joining Altan at Newry Town Hall is the esteemed guest artist Piaras Ó Lorcáin, whose youthful masterful artistry will add an extra layer of enchantment to the night. The event will be a seated affair, ensuring all attendees can fully immerse themselves in the melodious and vibrant atmosphere.
Doors will open at 7:30 PM, inviting fans to experience an evening where the echoes of tradition meet the energy of live performance. This concert is a fitting tribute to this areas deep-seated musical legacy, offering both locals and visitors a chance to revel in the sounds that have shaped the region’s cultural landscape.
Tickets are expected to sell quickly for this highlight of the 2024 Iúr Cinn Fleadh, so be sure to secure your seat early for what will be a magical night of music and celebration.
