Bikes and Beats taking to the streets of Newry this August

It used to be cruel. Now it’s cool to say ‘on yer bike’ – in the nicest possible way – especially when it means joining the Iùr Cinn Fleadh‘s Bikes And Beats On The Street next month.

After a successful launch last year, once again the Fleadh will be hitting the streets of Newry for everyone who loves getting out on their bike – to boogie. 

On Sunday 27 August get yourselves down to the entrance of the Carlingford Lough Greenway at the Albert Basin. Join the other bikers  there for a fun lap of the city with Irish rapper and DJ Cú Chulainn leading the way while belting out the tunes. It doesn't matter whether you are a person of a certain age that takes the bike more for a walk than a cycle or a lycra clad Dublin and back in an afternoon kind of person or cycling full of the joys of youth without a care in the world. There's room for all at this event where the emphasis is on chilled out fun and a chance to 'own' the streets of Newry for a brief while.

One of our very own committee members, the extremely unsporty journo Columba O’Hare, remembers the 2022 launch of this unusual event. ‘Bikes And Beats was so much fun last year,’ Columba recalled.

Bigger Crowd

‘For an hour it gave us the chance to reclaim the streets of Newry for cyclists of all ages. As we biked along to the vibes from DJ Cú Chulainn and the smiles from onlookers, for a brief instant it seemed anything was possible for us two-wheelers in our city. So looking forward to an even bigger crowd this year.’

The Fleadh folk aim to build this event year on year. Inspired by the likes of Dom Whiting and his Drum and Bass on the Bike events (Check out his event from Dublin in 2022) except with a rap/ trad vibe, we want to see hundreds of Newry people out on their wheels enjoying a wee bit of 'madness'

DJ Cú Chulainn said "Bikes and Beats on the Street brought the whole community together last year in what was an unforgettable cycle ride around the city. 

"The Ibiza beats were pumping, MC Cú Chulainn was getting the budding cyclists going with rave chants and cheers. Everyone was having a laugh, meeting new people and most importantly getting out of the house to clear their heads. Even the PSNI were shouting “Oggi Oggi Oggi? Oi! Oi! Oi!"
