A memorial concert for Newry Chamber Music founder Joe Quigley has been moved to Warrenpoint Town Hall because of high demand for tickets. The event will go ahead as planned on Saturday 7 November at 7pm with musicians performing the music Joe loved, from Puccini and Mozart to The Furey Brothers and John Denver.
Joe, who passed away in July, was a lifelong enthusiast of classical music and the inspiration behind the founding of Newry Chamber Music. His passion for music, encouragement and unwavering support helped lay the foundations for the organisation, which is now regarded as one of Ireland’s most vibrant chamber music groups.
He was the father of Newry Chamber Music’s Artistic Director, Joanne Quigley McParland, and of pianist David Quigley. Both will perform at the concert, which has been organised as a personal celebration of his life for family, friends and fellow musicians.
Joanne Quigley McParland said: “Dad was the true founder of Newry Chamber Music. His love of music was infectious, and without his enthusiasm, encouragement and belief in what we were doing, none of this would have happened. He loved great music in all its forms, whether it was Mozart, Puccini, Rachmaninoff, The Fureys or John Denver, and we wanted this concert to reflect that.
“It means a great deal to my family and me to have so many wonderful friends and colleagues joining us to celebrate his life. I think Dad would have absolutely loved the occasion.”
Joining Joanne and David on stage will be soprano Mary McCabe, tenor Aaron O’Hare, singer-songwriter Matt McGinn, violinist Clare Hadwen, violist Kath Barnecutt and cellist Gerald Peregrine. Gavan Quigley will also appear on guitar, making it a family occasion.
The programme reflects Joe’s wide musical tastes. It will include the operatic music of Puccini, Mozart’s Piano Concerto No. 21 and the music of Rachmaninoff, alongside songs by The Furey Brothers and John Denver. Classical, folk and popular song will share the evening, which will be shaped by the memories of those who knew him.
The decision to move to Warrenpoint Town Hall reflects the affection in which Joe was held and the interest in the tribute. The change of venue will allow more people to attend an evening of music, friendship and remembrance.
