A charity comedy fundraiser featuring Newry's very own Lianne McCooey is taking place at the MAC Belfast later this month, with tickets on sale now. Stand Up for Someone, now in its second year, will raise funds for Action Mental Health, a charity which has faced significant financial pressure following the loss of 64% of its government funding.

The two-night event coinciding with Mental Health Awareness Week, takes place on Friday, 29 and Saturday, 30 May 2026, with Newry's Lianne McCooey among a mix of established and up-and-coming comedians on the bill. Fellow performers include Emer Maguire and Micky Bartlett, with Dave Elliott, Action Mental Health Ambassador, serving as compère for both nights.

Comedian Dave Elliott said: "Stand Up for Someone campaign gigs actively create awareness and highlight, through humour, that it's okay not to be okay. Real people are going through a tough time, and while there is truth in the idea that laughter may be the best medicine, I'm trying to do something different for Action Mental Health. Funding is a huge issue for Action Mental Health and other front-line mental health services, especially following the recent loss of 64% of government funding, which has created a massive shortfall."

He added: "We are taking solace in the fact that all funds raised will directly support the essential services Action Mental Health provides for children, young people and adults. The gig also takes place during Mental Health Awareness Week, which makes it especially poignant."

Action Mental Health's Head of Communications and Fundraising, Jonathan Smyth, said: "We're excited to announce the second Stand Up for Someone events, which, like last year, will bring together a host of comedians to help us raise funds and increase awareness about mental health. We encourage everyone to come along, enjoy a great night out, have a laugh and support people in your local community at the same time."

Elliott added "The Stand Up for Someone gigs are not to be missed, as they offer a unique opportunity to enjoy a mixture of top comedians performing together on one night. Even better is the fact that by supporting the event, you'll also be helping to raise vital funds for Action Mental Health, a long-standing charity dedicated to supporting people who are struggling with mental health challenges."

Tickets are priced at £27.50 and can be booked at amh.org.uk
