Newry based author Seán Maguire recently launched a poetry collection: Feeling Gravity’s Pull. The title of the book was taken from a song by rock band REM of the same name. The book has a subtitle: Peeling layers of human experience.
Seán believes the poems, reflect how people feel pulled apart by the demands of modern life including the dictates of technology and social media which can have negative effects on our thinking.
"During the lockdown periods of the pandemic there was an increase in disconnection and loneliness. Mental illness was on the increase in the north before the pandemic. It increased during Covid and since then. People feel tired, fearful, and isolated."
Seán Added "Whilst some of the topics dealt with serious social issues, there is also a lot of humour. My passion for music is evident with references to bands and artists including David Bowie, T Rex, The Doors, Otis Redding, Marvin Gaye and poems dedicated to Joe Strummer from The Clash and hip-pioneer Gill Scott Heron."
Seán has been writing poems and stories from the early 1980's. His Harvest Soul collection of poetry was published by Sessyu Press in 1998. In 2017 he also published 'For Those Left Behind' a work of poetry reflecting growing up in the troubles.
His work was also published by Poetry NI, Poetry in Motion, nine muse poetry, Honest Ulsterman, Pangolin Review and The Children of the Nation, An Anthology of Working People’s Poetry from Contemporary Ireland, Culture Matters 2019.
