And now and then that utter cry
Out of the deep of the daily hell
‘How long, how long must be endured’
A cry from the core of body and soul,
And out of the echo of that lament
We settled into our quiet groan
To let that all be over now,
And let that day be done.
We raised our psalm, we raised our song
To shape the deep of the vale of loss,
We plucked the strings of daily grief,
We filled the reeds of hope, of promise.
But the long sigh never left us
Year on year and year again
To let that all be over now,
To let that day be done.
And then a touch of the west wind
Began a stirring on the frost,
And the thaw appeared and spread out
In the ever loosening of the east.
And wound by wound began to heal
And scar began to fall
As the shrunken tyrant drained away,
As the flow of freedom covered all.
And whether of heaven’s bounty,
Whether a cycle of the world,
Some landing of the turning fates
Some way of things untold,
But let that trauma come no more,
Remain away, forever gone.
And let all that be over now.
And let that day be done.
Peter Makem (A poem of aspiration that liberation will
come despite all the obstacles.)
