Thanks to the Housing Executive Rathfriland residents enjoyed an evening of traditional music, performance art, prose and dance on Saturday past to mark St Patrick's Day.
The event, organised by Rathfriland Regeneration at Chandler's House was built on the success of a Burns Night celebration held earlier in the year. The Housing Executive provided £1,820 towards both occasions as part of its Good Relations Programme.
Performers on the night included local musicians the Kelly Family, Suzanne Savage, John Cunningham, Cormac McKay and Ciaran Mussen. The evening was rounded off with Irish stew and wheaten bread, supplied by local coffee shop Vera & Ernie.
Andrew Peters, Vice Chair at Rathfriland Regeneration, said: "Building on our Burns Night celebration earlier this year, this event was another opportunity to strengthen community relationships and celebrate local tradition, music and literature. Thanks to our performers who brought the legend of St Patrick to life and to the Housing Executive for supporting us."
The Good Relations Programme funding was administered through the Housing Executive's Armagh, Banbridge and Craigavon office. Michelle Hazlett, Good Relations Officer for the area, said: "Rathfriland is home to people from all generations and diverse community backgrounds. We're pleased to have supported these events, which have created a shared space for local communities to come together, to deepen relationships and understanding and increase a sense of belonging."
Rathfriland Regeneration said its events aim to create a sense of shared cultural heritage among people from a diverse range of religious and cultural backgrounds, with the goal of increasing respect and understanding across the community.
