A filmmaker from Rostrevor had his film selected for the world renouned Comic Con festival back in 2020, but with the event cancelled due to the pandemic it's only now that Rik Gordon got the chance to go over to California to pick it up.
On the festivals return organisers invited back all the participants from 2020.
Comic-Con, the flagship popular arts festival is an event that attracts over 130,000 people and the biggest names in the industry. Marvel, Disney, DC etc. It takes place in San Diego California at the end of July
Gordon said "After the disappointment hearing that the festival was cancelled I was so happy to have the opportunity to go, this was an event I couldn't miss"
He made the trip over to San Diego and the film screened to a busy crowd of eager genre film fans. The film played in the Horror / Suspense category. It played alongside films from all over the world, including New Zealand, India, Greece and Canada. After the screening Rik gave a panel talk about the making of the film back in 2018.
The awards ceremony took place the next day and Gordon's film picked up the award for Best Horror/Suspense category, a very competitive category at the festival, much to his delight and disbelief.
The film entitled Pure Gold follows a farmer during the famine who is tortured by a mischievous creature that teases the farmer during his darkest moments, it is a fable about the temptation of greed.
The film was shot in the hills behind his hometown of Rostrevor back in October 2018 using cast and crew from Kerry, Cork, Dublin and Belfast and a young talented actor from Rathfriland.
The film went on to screen in many festivals around Ireland and internationally including Chicago, Boston, Kosovo, Budapest and Poland.
Gordon said "The film was very well received by international audiences as they commented on the beauty of our area represented in the film. It always great when your film is selected for a festival, but getting selected for Comic Con and winning the award was the icing on the cake
"Comic Con was an amazing experience, interacting and meeting so many artists. The film was very well received, there is a mischievous leprechaun in the film, that I made and I brought him over to San Diego, everyone loved him. They would stop me in the street so they could take photos of him"

Gordon is now making his first feature film and he says the premise is one that will get a lot of attention. The filmmaker is looking for local businesses and investors for his horror film and believes it will enjoy the same success if not more than his previous shorts
He concludes "Even though I've made threes successful shorts it's hard to get the backing from major studios or government bodies because a feature film is still a big undertaking. I've now got a network of talented filmmakers who are willing to help me make this feature film happen"
