It’s rare for local phenomenon The Sands Family to play in Newry – so they jumped at the chance when invited to take part in the Iúr Cinn Fleadh on their home patch.
Often, when returning from far-off travels, people ask them, ‘Do you ever play anywhere close to home at all? Well, the answer to that is a definite ‘yes’ – at the Town Hall on Saturday August 27!
Global Interest
Like most performers, The Sands Family welcome the return of live music after the long drought of the past few years. They’re especially glad to have a chance to be part of Iúr Cinn Fleadh – not only to support the Fleadh’s vision to share the power of music in making the city a better place for residents and visitors alike, but also because it’s a rare chance to play in Newry.
Born, bred and based in County Down, The Sands Family have been singing and playing music since the late 60s. With their tours, recordings, radio and TV work, the band played a significant part in the creation of the global interest in Irish folk and traditional music.
Local Stories
Siblings Tommy, Ben, Colum and Anne would be the first to agree that their ability to weave local and often humorous stories into songs that travel the world is greatly inspired by their connection to the people, places and stories from close to home – their chosen theme for their Fleadh concert.
The Sands Family are very much looking forward to meeting friends old and new, as they bring their songs and stories for the times in which we live, along with some special guests to Iúr Cinn Fleadh 2022. And we’re looking forward to hearing them!
