This weekend sees a brand new festival take root in South Armagh. The Fairy Tree International Festival takes place on Saturday 20 May at An Tobar in Silverbridge and Ti Chulainn in Mullaghbawn.
Sharing cultures, learning languages and promoting South Armagh internationally have been the main objectives behind school trips that began in 2015 when the first group of Catalan children came to stay in Mullaghbawn and spend time in the classrooms of St Mary’s Primary. This year, after a gap due to Covid, Anne Sullivan International School Barcelona visits Mullaghbawn from May 16th to 21st where among the highlights of their trip is the Fairy Tree Festival in An Tobar and the Ceili at Ti Chulainn both on this Saturday 20 May.
Catalonia is one of the most beautiful regions in Spain, with Barcelona as its capital city, and there are many similarities between Catalan and Irish culture including the importance of family, the deep respect for history and the welcoming of guests.
Events at An Tobar run from 10.30am to 3.30pm on Saturday with Bodhrán, Language and Storytelling Workshops from 11am-12.30pm, a Forest School whistle, music and song workshops at 2-3.30pm followed by the planting of a commemorative festival tree. Poetry and heritage tours are also available for children and adults throughout the day. The An Tobar events are for ages 8-12.
The Céilí Mór takes place at Ti Chulainn from 8-10pm on Saturday with voluntary donations to Tubbies Parent and Toddler Group and Mbikko Parish, Uganda.
We welcome you to join us at the Fairy Hawthorne tree - the meeting place of two worlds. You might even meet the Sidhe!
