The Crisis Café and Sticky Fingers Arts, Newry held an alternative fashion show last night in front of a capacity crowd at their Edward Street premises. Two and a half years in the planning but for those lucky enough to get in, it was surely worth the wait!

Instead of the models walking the runway, modelling throw away fashion trends and styles, which we are tirelessly bombarded with throughout the year, the models wore costumes which displayed their inner fears, insecurities and dark thoughts as well as the effects of covid on young people. In some cases many of these issues are caused by the exhaustive feeling of trying to keep up with all the trends in clothing, makeup, cosmetic procedures and social media posts.

Sticky Fingers Arts in collaboration with a group of teenage girls, a young women’s group with the Education Authority, worked tirelessly over the past three months to design and create the incredible costumes, as well as work with youth workers and a videographer to channel their ideas into something visual which deals with issues faced by the young people on a daily basis.

The ‘Runway of Life’ at Sticky Fingers Arts Theatre really did showcase the incredible creativity our young people have. On the night they paraded their creations, followed by short clips on the development of the costumes and the ideas behind them.

Young People from the Crisis Café performed several musical sets throughout the evening and gave a brief introduction into the wonderful work the Crisis Café do.

The Project was funded by Peace IV.
