The Ulster Consort will perform Handel’s Messiah in Newry Cathedral on Friday 27 November, with four soloists from around Ireland. The performance will use period instruments and a small choir, in a historically informed style. Ulster Consort understands it will be the first time the work has been performed in full in Newry with a professional orchestra.
The soloists are Rebecca Murphy on soprano, Laura Lamph on mezzo soprano, Owen Lucas on tenor and Eoghan Desmond on bass. They will join The Ulster Consort and Players, with Matthew Owens conducting to relive the story of Christ’s birth, passion and resurrection.
The Ulster Consort is Northern Ireland’s newest paid, professional choral ensemble, and describes themselves as the choral equivalent of the Ulster Orchestra. Its annual performances of Messiah use period instruments, small vocal forces and a historically informed style, which the Consort says makes the offering unique in Northern Ireland.
For the Newry performance the choir will consist of 14 singers, joined by the four soloists and around 14 orchestral players. The players will be travelling to Northern Ireland from Ireland, Great Britain and Europe, and will play on authentic Baroque instruments, as Handel would have intended.
The performance takes place on Friday 27 November at 7pm in Newry Cathedral.
