All of us have dreams and many never get to realise them, but for Polish native Dan Gebski a forty year old dream became a reality when he went into a recording studio in Carlingford, recorded a song and has now published it to the world, complete with a beautifully captured video showing stunning Irish scenery.
Dan calls the project 'The Dreamer' and together with friends he recorded the Tom Petty song Free Fallin. The two main reasons for the project were to mark the 20th anniversary of living here in Newry, with the second one to fulfil a childhood dream of going into a studio and recording a song.
The finished song is a beautifully created chilled out tune with incredible vocals and instrumentation from a very talented group of people.
As Dan said "I waited over 40 years to do it. I want to show to people especially to foreign nationals, that you can fulfil your dream if you want. It doesn't matter where you are from or what age you are."
It came about following a previous project 'From Zero to Hero' which published the stories of inspirational people on Newry.ie and elsewhere. During that project he met a lot of people, including Dean Wright and Jason Varley from Carlingford band Varlight. Jason has a recording studio in Carlingford and through him Melissa Hayes and Stephen Priestly came on board. Fellow Polish man Wojciech Palka was also brought in to record the video footage.
The main reason for the project apart from fulfilling a childhood dream was to get 'The Dreamer' name out there and it is planned that another song will follow as a charity fundraiser.
Dan, 45 played bass guitar and sang in a heavy rock band back in Poland when he was a teenager but it's not something he has done in recent years.
Tom Petty's Free Fallin was picked as Dan found it an easy song to sing. Dan explained "Tom Petty didn't even know himself why he created that song but the main driver of the song that people understand is free falling, it doesn't matter what goes on in your life, or the hard situations, you always go and drive the positive, you always should free fall and be able to dance in the rain. It's a positive story really."
His experience wasn't quite what he was expecting but it was really enjoyable "I thought recording was like, we meet for one day together, and we just sing and walk away - that's not the case. It was three days work in the studio full time. I had to sing one verse maybe 50 times to get it right" Dan said.
Reflecting on what he got out of it Dan concluded "First of all, it gave me experience and gave me joy, because I fulfilled what I wanted. Secondly I met a lot of local artists and I know there's loads of people out there that are happy to participate in happy news. The last thing I would say is that it has driven me crazy to do another one."
With the quality of the first production us lot at Newry.ie can't wait to see what comes next!
