Chamber President, Edwina Flynn and Chamber CEO, Michael Savage discuss how the Minister’s Economic Vision overlaps with the Chamber’s three core strategic pillars.

Newry Chamber of Commerce & Trade met up with Economy Minister, Conor Murphy MLA earlier this week for discussions on the Economic Strategy for the Greater Newry Area.

Minister Murphy detailed his Economic Vision for the North, focusing on four key areas: Creating Good Jobs, Promoting Regional Balance, Increasing Productivity, and Reducing Carbon Emissions.

Edwina Flynn, President of Newry Chamber, and CEO Michael Savage expressed their support for the Minister’s approach. Savage highlighted how the Minister’s strategy aligns with the Chamber’s pillars: developing a large, active membership, addressing infrastructure deficits to unlock Newry's potential, and collaborating on local strategies for skills and recruitment challenges.

Chamber Vice President, Gary Digney, and Board Members, Deborah Loughran and Dr Conor Patterson, also attended the meeting. Dr. Patterson is advising the Minister on Regional Balance.

After the meeting, Flynn stated, “It was great to welcome the Minister to discuss his Economic Vision for the North and how we can work together to build a sustainable economy for Greater Newry.”

Savage added, “The Greater Newry Area is entering a decade of opportunity. As a Gateway City to European and UK Markets, we must be ready to seize these opportunities. The Chamber’s strategic pillars align with the Minister’s vision, and we look forward to advancing today's discussions to strengthen Newry’s economic future.”

Minister Murphy commented, “I discussed with Newry Chamber the challenges and opportunities for the local business community. The Greater Newry Area, located at the heart of the Dublin-Belfast Economic Corridor with a strong talent base, is well positioned for the all-Ireland economy and dual market access. This engagement will contribute to the local economic plan by my department and Invest NI.”
