firmus energy has announced its renewed support for a health-based initiative that refurbishes old or unwanted bicycles which are then sold at affordable prices to people living across Northern Ireland.

Operated by Newry Cycle Recycle C.I.C, this is the fifth time the local energy supplier is getting involved in a programme that aims to boost people’s mental and physical fitness through bicycle ownership.

Established as a Social Enterprise a decade ago by Newry man Gerard Hughes, Newry Cycle Recycle C.I.C is devoted to offering a wide range of bikes for adults and children, including safety gear and accessories.

Each donated or reclaimed bicycle is fully serviced and handed a clean bill of health by Newry Cycle Recycle C.I.C – the only certified Velotech Bicycle Maintenance Course provider operating in Ireland.

Gerard’s interest in salvaging bicycles piqued when he came across examples that were destined to be crushed at his local amenity centre. Since then, thousands have been sold back into the community.

Previously, this has been made possible with backing from firmus energy and today’s announcement means this good work will continue and reach those who are keen to get their own set of wheels.

Niall Martindale, firmus energy’s Chief Executive, said: “Like firmus energy, Newry Cycle Recycle C.I.C has a sustainability ethos and is committed to making a positive contribution to the people of Northern Ireland.

“We are delighted to team up with Gerard and his colleagues at Newry Cycle Recycle C.I.C so that, as a local business, we can give back to the communities we operate in. That is something we always look to do.

“In the time firmus energy has been involved with the initiative I’ve been impressed by Gerard’s vision, his hard work and commitment. Everyone is excited to be able to continue our relationship with him.”

When he retired from the Fire Service, Gerard said a people-based health and well-being programme quickly became his focus. As demand for refurbished bicycles has steadily grown across all age groups since COVID-19, so too has the need for support from reputable businesses such as firmus energy.

“It is great to have firmus energy on board with Newry Cycle Recycle C.I.C once again,” said Gerard. “We hope that other large employers will see this as an opportunity to support our work by asking staff to donate their unwanted bikes so that we can fix them up and give them a new home.”

firmus energy introduced natural gas to Newry back in 2006. Since then, it has invested £16 million to increase its network in the area where over 4,140 customers have already switched to natural gas.
